Lufthansa Technik has completed the conversion of an Airbus A310 – formerly operated by the German government as a VIP aircraft – into a Zero-G aircraft to be operated by Novespace of Bordeaux, France. Some 1,300 modifications were required in the framework of the conversion programme in order to convert the aircraft back to its original factory default state as required by EASA. The cabin refit then commenced, with the 20m long test area proving particularly challenging. This is the area where prospective astronauts can experience weightlessness for the first time, or where scientific investigations will take place. Extra powerful light installations were required for this purpose, with care being taken to ensure that these would not pose a hazard for the weightless passengers.
