FL Technics will expand its London-based aircraft spare parts stock and halve delivery time through cooperation with B&H Worldwide. With the main warehouse in Lithuania, FL Technics manages a wide range of aircraft spare part stock located in the UK, Malaysia, Poland, Russia and the USA. The cooperation agreement with B&H Worldwide will provide FL Technics with additional warehousing capacities, as well as inventory inspection and customs clearance support. The extended London-based stock will include up to 1,500 part numbers, covering new and overhauled spare parts, consumables, rotables and PMA-parts for Airbus A320 Family, Boeing 737 Classic/NG and other aircraft types. The delivery time will be twice as fast as of those located at FL Technics’ Lithuanian base.

HAECO Cabin Solutions will expand its design engineering and interiors product manufacturing capacity in a new 24,000m² facility in High Point, NC, close to HAECO Americas’ headquarters in Greensboro. Renovations will start this year, and the facility is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2016. HAECO Americas is experiencing increased demand for its engineering capabilities, such as airline fleet retrofit programmes, as well as interiors products like the company’s new Vector-Y passenger seats and FeatherWeight galleys and lavatories. Up to 400 employees are expected to work at the new facility, including a mix of new hires and transfers from other existing HAECO locations.

Lufthansa Technik Group is signing up 157 young people on traditional or dual-study training programmes; 10 more than in 2014. There will be a total of 560 trainees in the Group, while the selection process for 2016 is already underway – see www.be-lufthansa.com/technik for more information.

 

Hamburg: 78 trainees and dual- programme trainees are joining the programme this year. Most of the slots are for aircraft mechanics with specialties in maintenance (12), engines (12), production engineering (12) and avionics (12). This year also saw 12 people begin their training as tool mechanics, seven as specialists for inventory administration (Lufthansa Technik Logistik Services (LTLS)), and two as surface coating technicians. In addition, there are new trainees in Hamburg for the following degree-based professions: three practice-oriented aircraft engineers (Bachelor of Engineering), two practice-oriented electrical engineers (Bachelor of Science), two mechanical engineers (Bachelor of Science) and two students of mechatronics. The degree coursework for these programmes takes place at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences.

 

Frankfurt: 58 traditional and dual-study trainees will be starting this year: 18 aircraft mechanics specialising in maintenance; 24 avionic technicians; and 10 destined to become specialists for inventory administration at LTLS. Four trainees are commencing a dual-study programme in aviation system engineering and management for maintenance engineers in cooperation with the Bremen University of Applied Sciences. LEOS will train two young people as automotive mechatronics technicians.

Arnstadt: 10 aircraft mechanic apprentices with a specialty in engine technology will strengthen N3 Engine Overhaul Services’ workforce.

 

Alzey: Five aircraft mechanic apprentices with a specialty in engine technology and one machinist in milling technology will be trained at Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey. One place was filled on the Bachelor of Engineering in cooperation with the University of Kaiserslautern as a starting point for the dual-study programme.

 

Munich: Three people will begin training at Lufthansa Technik Logistik Services as specialists for inventory administration, with one starting at LEOS as an automotive mechatronics technician.

 

The number of places providing training as avionic technicians has been significantly expanded. With a total of 36 new trainees, Lufthansa Technik is taking account of the increasing importance of this specialty, especially in the maintenance organisation in Frankfurt. Apart from the progressive development of the actual aircraft, this trend is also a reflection of the significant expansion of IFEC offers on board. As was seen last year, LTLS will have 20 new trainees in inventory administration. With a total of 52 trainees, this is one of the major training operations in the Lufthansa Technik Group. N3 Engine Overhaul Services, headquartered in Arnstadt in Thuringia, has also further consolidated its position as a training location in the Group with 53 trainees.

 

The percentage of women among the new trainees has fallen to 13%; 2% down on 2014. This is a clear sign for Lufthansa Technik to continue its efforts to seek out and inform young women about the variety of possibilities available in technical professions.

Magnetic MRO has launched a boroblend repair service for High Pressure Compressor (HPC) blades for CFM56-3/5A/5B/7B engines. The service is performed on-wing and does not require engine removal or disassembly – access to the damaged blade is gained via regular borescope inspection ports. On-wing support engineers are available to perform the repair at the customer’s location or home base at very short notice.

Nayak Aircraft Service was recently involved in the lifting of an Airbus A300 at Cologne Bonn Airport from the apron to its final location on the north parking lot. The 80 tonne aircraft, which was previously used by DLR for zero-g parabolic flights, is a new visitor attraction. A heavy duty Liebherr LR 1.600 crane with a 600 tonne lifting capacity was used, having been delivered by 35 trucks and constructed over five days. It was operated by Riga Mainz. The successful lifting lasted approximately two hours and involved a rotation through almost 180º, using a special three-point support structure attached to the fuselage and both wings.

Pratt & Whitney has delivered the first PurePower PW1400G-JM engine for the MC-21 aircraft family to the podding facility at Russia’s Irkut Corporation. The PW1400G-JM engine was assembled and tested at the Pratt & Whitney West Palm Beach Engine Center in Florida before being shipped to Irkutsk.

Scandinavian Avionics has received two STC approvals for installation of its Electronic Flight Bag solution in ATR 42/72 and British Aerospace ATP aircraft. The solution for the ATR consists of: two ruggedized 10.1in Panasonic tablets; Scandinavian Avionics DIC-600 Data Integration with avionics interfaces for integration into the aircraft’s data buses; ERC-400 Communication Controller for off-board communication; and EFB control panels with charging capabilities for the pilot’s personal devices and Camera Surveillance system. The ATP solution consists of two ruggedized 10.1in Panasonic tablets, and Scandinavian Avionics’ DIC-600 Data Integration Center prepared for future integration of avionics and communication systems. Installation will start this autumn at several customer locations.

SOAR and Ascent Aviation Services Corporation have formed a renewable five year Cooperative Working Agreement to offer international AOG field support services to the commercial aviation community. Under the management of SOAR, Ascent is participating in AOG recovery, evaluation, and repair activities. The Ascent team will lend their expertise and personnel to each project as needed. SOAR remains as the single point of contact for all AOG and field team or field support requests.

TES has announced the introduction of a new full aircraft transition service; an extension of the existing engine transition service that TES has been delivering since the company began operations in 1995. Under this new service, TES is able to offer both existing and new clients a single source solution for both airframe and engines, incorporating physical and records inspections, borescope inspections and, where required, aircraft registration/deregistration, ferry flight, fuelling and crew services. The service launched with the delivery of a Boeing 767 from GECAS to long-term TES partner, Icelandair.

Turkish Cabin Interiors (TCI) has achieved Global Offerable Status for Boeing 737 aircraft galleys. TCI, a joint venture between Turkish Airlines (THY) and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), was established in 2011, starting with design and production of 737 single-aisle galleys, followed by Airbus A330, A320 VIP and retrofit galley programmes.
