8tree has announced that its dentCHECK system has been used by Airbus at its Flightline operations in Hamburg, Germany. When inspecting dents post-rework on the difficult-to-access joint section 14/15 of a painted A320 aircraft, technicians achieved compelling efficiency gains in excess of 90% when using dentCHECK, compared to traditional manual methods.

dentCHECK is the world's only handheld portable and completely wireless 3D scanner to be published with multiple approvals in Airbus' Tool Equipment Manuals (TEMs) for the express purpose of dent-mapping on metallic aero-structures and composite cabin floor-boards. Other aircraft OEMs are expected to issue similar guidance in the coming weeks, enabling more airlines to implement dentCHECK to boost their maintenance efficiency.

Aerostar has signed a contract for the design, construction and fitting out of a new MRO facility at Iasi International Airport in northeast Romania. This followed the signing of a 49-year lease with the local authorities in the late summer of 2017. The new four-bay hangar, which is planned to be open for business in the summer of 2019, will increase Aerostar’s throughput of Airbus A320ceo and neo families and Boeing 737 Classic and New Generation overhauls by up to 40%. The new facility lies 130km north of Aerostar’s existing business operations at Bacau where two dedicated hangars provide six/seven aircraft bays which are invariably full during the peak maintenance periods. During 2017 a total of 87 aircraft completed C and D checks at Bacau and, so far in 2018, 52 aircraft have been maintained. Since the company moved into commercial aviation MRO activities 14 years ago close to 600 aircraft from some 47 airlines have been overhauled at Bacau

AeroTEC has been certified by the FAA as a Part 145 Repair Station (Air Agency Certificate No. 4T1R174D). The limited accessory rating means AeroTEC has been authorised to perform maintenance, inspection and repair on aircraft accessories. This complements AeroTEC’s flight test and certification capabilities and an airframe and powerplant rating is expected early next year.

With locations in Seattle (engineering), and Moses Lake (flight test), WA, the company has grown from 20 to 400 employees since 2015, largely due to its role in the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) flight test and certification programme. AeroTEC facilities include hangars for widebody and narrowbody jetliners.

AerSale has received FAA STC approval (ST04010NY) for installation of its AerSafe system on Airbus A321 aircraft in compliance with the Fuel Tank Flammability Reduction (FTFR) rule. EASA has also approved AerSafe (10065226) on Airbus 321 aircraft as a Flammability Reduction System (FRS). This new STC is in addition to AerSale’s STCs for the Boeing 767 series (ST03599NY), approved by the FAA in February 2018, as well as the Boeing 737 CL series (ST03589NY) and the Boeing 737 NG series (ST02980NY), both approved in 2016.

AerSafe is available in less than six weeks, installs in two days, has no mechanical parts to fail, and once installed, is maintenance-free. Tested and developed to exact tolerances to fill the cavity of the Airbus A321 centre fuel tanks, AerSafe limits the amount of available oxygen that can ignite fuel vapours and prevents sparks from igniting an explosion. AerSafe comes as a complete prefabricated kit that can be installed at any hangar around the world. After initial installation, the system requires no maintenance or spare parts. A limited number of AerSafe kits are currently available for immediate installation. For larger orders, the lead time for ordering AerSafe is currently 60 days versus the one-year lead time for the nitrogen inerting system.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) has announced that, in July 2018, it will withdraw a Boeing 737-500 out of retirement as a dedicated training jet to help assure its maintenance technicians have the best tools for training and to ensure the highest level of quality maintenance. ANA is the first Japanese airline to incorporate a non-operating fully functional jet into its training programme.

Avionica and GE Aviation have expanded their partnership by forming a joint venture through GE's acquisition of an ownership interest in Avionica. The JV allows the companies to accelerate edge processing and wireless connectivity to maximise the value of aircraft data. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The JV combines Avionica's suite of flight data management solutions, which includes wifi, cellular and satellite connectivity, with GE Aviation's analytics expertise and digital products to address customer needs in flight analytics, aircraft health management and flight operations. The JV will enable new levels of efficiency across a wide range of flight operations including air transport, general aviation and agriculture. The combined solutions are available with existing certifications for more than 300 models of aircraft including Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, Embraer, HondaJet, Cessna, as well as Thrush agriculture aircraft.

Avionica's satellite and cellular wireless technologies support the transfer of both small and large flight data sets with global coverage, economical cost and easy installation. The combination of real-time and post flight connectivity with edge technology provides customers options to increase the value of flight data while managing connectivity costs.

Boeing and Turkish Technic have signed a Global Fleet Care supplier agreement. Turkish Technic is now a strategic Boeing supplier for line maintenance, heavy maintenance of aircraft, component services and repair. Boeing and Turkish Technic will collaborate together in the training and certification of technicians from different parts of the world.

Last year, Boeing and the Turkish Government announced the Boeing Turkey National Aerospace Initiative, launched to support the growth of the Turkish aerospace industry, in conjunction with the targets set by Turkey's Vision 2023 that specially designed for the 100th establishment anniversary of the Turkish Republic. The initiative outlines a strategic framework that aligns Boeing investment and programs with the Turkish Government, Turkish airlines, aerospace service companies and industry suppliers in the areas of research, engineering and skills development.

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft will donate a CS100 aircraft to the École Nationale d’Aérotechnique (ÉNA), a school affiliated with Édouard-Montpetit CEGEP, to be used for the purpose of education and training. With this donation, ÉNA becomes the world’s first teaching institution to count a C Series aircraft among its fleet.

The CS100 (MSN 50003) was built in 2014, and was the third Flight Test Vehicle (FTV3) of the C Series programme. Since its maiden flight, the aircraft accumulated approximately 1,400 flight hours. FTV3 was mainly used for avionics and electrical tests, as well as for community noise testing. The aircraft is currently stationed at the Bombardier Flight Test Centre in Wichita, KS, and will join ÉNA’s existing fleet of 37 aircraft in Saint-Hubert, Quebec in the coming weeks. ÉNA’s static fleet already includes two Learjet and two Challenger aircraft.

Commercial Jet has become the industry launch partner of the MDC WORKS: Apprenticeship Program, sponsored by Miami Dade College (MDC) in collaboration with the US Department of Labor and the Florida Department of Education. The Commercial Jet Aircraft Structural Assembly and Fabrication Apprenticeship Program will provide a combination of courses and on-the-job training to prepare people for high-skilled aviation jobs. The work preparing this 24-month Apprenticeship Program was initiated earlier this year and will continue for an autumn 2018 start date to be announced in the next few weeks.
