EXCLUSIVE: Lithuanian MRO expansion bookmark

Lithuanian Airports has launched the AEROHUB VNO development programme at Vilnius International Airport, which includes an MRO area that will be taken over by FL Technics. FL Technics already operates a three-bay hangar at this facility.

 

Over the next five years, after some of the existing buildings have been demolished, a three-bay hangar will undergo construction, offering the only dedicated paint bay in the region, along with an addition two-bay hangar. While both hangars are set to be 28m high and sized for Airbus A320/Boeing 737, two smaller 20m high hangars will be used for business jet maintenance.  

 

Lithuanian Airports is also planning major expansion at Kaunas Airport, which already has two-bay hangars operated by FL Technics and Kaunas Aircraft Maintenance Services, with the latter belonging to Ryanair. Furthermore, DOT LT offers ATR 42 maintenance for Danish Air Charter whilst Helisota looks after helicopters. Recent negotiations with an overseas operator looks establish a maintenance base on the south side of the airport., where a Free Economic Zone (FEZ) is emerging. Kaunas will become a major logistics centre given its location at the crossroads of the Via Baltica highway system and the proposed Rail Baltica project, which will link European and Soviet gauge railways. Airpark, a block of 10 sites in the FEZ, has been reserved for aerospace companies.

easyJet opens new hangar at Gatwick bookmark

easyJet has opened a new two-bay hangar facility at London-Gatwick. The project was started when Virgin Atlantic made a strategic decision not to carry out 

third party maintenance – easyJet was the only customer.

 

The hangar design was selected from Rubb Buildings and is 91.5m wide x 60m long. The structure measures 9.2m to the eaves and 16.8m to the apex of each span. Each front gable measures 45.7m wide and features a three-part 41m wide x 13.5m vertical lifting fabric door from Megadoor. The hot dip galvanized steel frame is clad with 150mm thick Thermohall insulated fabric. There is 5200m² of usable working floorspace, which can accommodate two Airbus A321s. A full LED lighting system, ventilation system and LPG heating system will be installed. In addition, a complete suite of access platforms and stands and nitrogen carts has been supplied by Semmco, along with a moveable nose dock for access to the cockpit windows. The hangar is complimented by a 550m² external logistics and office building. Building commenced in November 2015 and the process included fitting 8,700m² of PVC membrane, 780 tonnes of concrete and 280 tonnes of steel. The installation of a sub-station and gas plant required power cables to be pulled from one side of the airport to the other.

 

The airline accounts for 40% of total passengers at Gatwick, which is its biggest base, with 55 aircraft. The first aircraft was inducted on 19 May and operations started with a single bay in operation. From 1 July, two aircraft will be in the hangar every night, seven days a week, for Light Base Maintenance inputs – the airline runs an equalised maintenance programme. During the day, it will be used for AOG hangar support.

 

Maintenance services will be provided by Lufthansa Technik Maintenance International (LTMI) under a five-year agreement. LTMI already works with easyJet at Milan-Malpensa and Berlin-Schoenefeld.
